516 miles, one single-track loop, and a passing place every quarter mile.
The North Coast 500 circles Scotland's northern Highlands from Inverness Castle and back — six regions, eleven distilleries, a mountain pass with a 20% gradient, and long stretches where the next fuel pump is further away than you think. This guide breaks the real route into five drivable stages and covers the parts other guides skip.
- 516 mi / 830 km total loop distance, Inverness to Inverness
- 6 regions Inverness-shire, Wester Ross, Easter Ross, Sutherland, Caithness, Black Isle
- 5–7 days the minimum most drivers actually need, not the 3-day version some itineraries push
It's a loop with almost no motorway, and that changes how you plan it.
Most of the NC500 runs on single-track roads with passing places rather than two-lane tarmac — average speeds are lower than the map distance suggests, fuel stations thin out badly on the west coast, and the most photographed stretch (the Bealach na Bà) is legally closed to caravans and vehicles over 5.5 m. None of that makes the route harder to enjoy; it makes it worth planning properly before you go.
Five real stages, not an arbitrary day-by-day split.
Each stage below follows a genuine change in the landscape — the west coast's sea lochs and single-track passes, the far north's peat moors, the east coast's whisky towns — so you can drive one, two, or all five depending on how long you have.
Inverness to Applecross
Loch Ness's back road, the Torridon giants, and the Bealach na Bà climb into the west coast's most isolated village.
Stage 2Applecross to Ullapool
Gairloch's beaches, Inverewe's sub-tropical garden, and the fishing port that anchors the whole west coast.
Stage 3Ullapool to Durness
Assynt's stand-alone mountains, Ardvreck Castle's ruin on Loch Assynt, and the emptiest fuel-gap stretch on the route.
Stage 4Durness to John o' Groats
Smoo Cave, the Kyle of Tongue and Castle Varrich, and the long peat-moor run to Scotland's northeast tip.
Stage 5John o' Groats to Inverness
Wick and Old Pulteney, Dunrobin Castle, and the whisky towns of Easter Ross on the run back south.

Which way do you give way? Answer two questions.
Single-track roads carry their own right-of-way rule, and it isn't always intuitive on a blind bend. This tool applies Highway Code Rule 155 to your exact situation — try it here, then read the full explanation on the driving notes page.
Answer both to get your move.
Pick your gradient and where the nearest passing place sits.
Eleven distilleries, mostly on the east coast
Glenmorangie, Dalmore, Balblair, Clynelish, Old Pulteney and Wolfburn all sit within a short detour of the route between Inverness and Thurso — the full trail, with which ones actually take walk-ins.
Ruins you can walk into, and one you can tour
Ardvreck's 15th-century tower on Loch Assynt, Castle Varrich above the Kyle of Tongue, and Dunrobin's still-lived-in fairytale pile near Golspie — three very different kinds of "castle" on one route.
Three things that change the trip more than any single stop does.
Fuel gaps
The west coast between Applecross and Ullapool has real distances between working pumps. Plan fill-ups, don't assume one.
Midges
Late May to September, still evenings, no wind — that's when they're worst, and it affects where you'll actually want to eat dinner outside.
When to go
May–June and September give you the best odds against midges and school-holiday traffic without losing daylight hours.
How many days
Five days is a genuine minimum if you want to get out of the car more than you're in it — here's how to allocate them.
Rooms for every stage of the drive
1,000 hotels from the Hotelbeds catalogue, 264 of them in the Highlands along the North Coast 500 and the rest across Britain for the drive north. Beds are scarce between Applecross and Durness, so choose the night's stop before the day's route. Search by name or town, open the filters for stars and facilities, and book directly with the hotel; we show no prices.
