Why Muxaril exists.
Most NC500 guides are either an official tourism-board overview or a single blogger's own trip diary. This one tries to sit between the two: structured like a reference, but written around the specific, practical things that actually change a first-time driver's trip.
What this site covers
The full 516-mile loop broken into five real stages, the passing-place rule that governs most of the driving, the fuel gaps worth planning around, the whisky distilleries and castles that sit on or near the road, and the honest seasonal trade-offs between midges, daylight, and crowds. It's built for someone driving the route for the first time who wants the practical layer most trip diaries skip past.
How it was researched
Facts about specific places — Bealach na Bà's gradient and vehicle restrictions, Highway Code Rule 155's exact wording, distillery histories, castle dates, real NC500 stage distances — were checked against public sources including Wikipedia, the official North Coast 500 route organisation, VisitScotland, the UK Highway Code, and established Highland travel-guide sites, not written from general impression alone. Distances and drive times are approximate and direction- and route-variant-dependent by nature of a route this loosely defined; where a source gave a specific figure, that figure is used and flagged as approximate.
What this site deliberately doesn't do
It doesn't book accommodation, distillery tours, or transport, and it isn't a live road-conditions service — for anything time-sensitive (a road closure, a distillery's current opening hours, a specific weather warning), always check the operator's or Traffic Scotland's own current information before you travel. The site does use a Google Ads tag to measure its own advertising, but only if you accept it in the cookie banner; see the privacy policy. It also isn't affiliated with North Coast 500 Ltd, VisitScotland, or any distillery, castle, or business named on this site.
The hotel catalogue
The Stay section lists hotels from the Hotelbeds catalogue: those in the Highlands along the route first, then the rest of Britain for the journey north. Descriptions, facilities, room types, coordinates, contact details and photos are supplied by Hotelbeds and the hotels, in English, and can be incomplete or out of date. We show no prices or availability and take no bookings: every hotel page links to the hotel's own contact details so that you book directly. Being listed does not mean a hotel has paid us, and hotel names, brands and photos belong to their owners.
